Thumpv4 Gives You the Clearest Sound for Every Gig (Even the Tricky Ones)

Thumpv4 Gives You the Clearest Sound for Every Gig (Even the Tricky Ones)

As a professional musician, DJ or live sound pro, you need a loudspeaker that sounds good at every gig. That includes the tricky ones, where nothing goes quite right. To make Thumpv4 loudspeakers the perfect solution for everyday gigging, we made sure they sound clear for any application, in any situation (even messy ones). How did we do it?

The answer is SoundCheck DSP™, a suite of features that use digital signal processing to make Thumpv4 sound ideal for any gig, while solving common problems you encounter during sound check. And the best part? Every SoundCheck DSP™ feature can activate at the press of a button. That means the clearest response, every time, without needing to know a single thing about audio.

Read our blog about how this technology works.

What Is SoundCheck DSP™?

SoundCheck DSP™ is what we call the digital signal processing in Mackie Thumpv4 loudspeakers. This advanced processing works behind the scenes to make sure Thumpv4 always sounds clear, impactful and professional. The only part you need to know is the buttons on the back panel. Just by pressing these simple buttons, you can use SoundCheck DSP™ to optimize Thumpv4 for your exact application. No need for an audio engineering degree — SoundCheck DSP™ is literally sound check at the press of a button.

What Do We Mean by “Sound Check at the Press of Button?”

When you set up for a gig (or band practice), good sound won’t necessarily happen automatically. The same speaker can sound different depending on the material and the setting. That’s true regardless of how good the amplifier, woofer and tweeter might be. Getting polished sound often requires adjustments to the EQ. These adjustments can serve all kind of purposes. Professional sound engineers know how to cut low frequency buildup in the monitors, boost upper mids to help the vocals cut through, and adjust the EQ to the indoors and outdoors. They’re experts. But you don’t have to be an expert with SoundCheck DSP™. Just select a voicing mode with a single button, and it will do the work behind the scenes. (There are also some buttons with clever features that help you with setup—more on that later.)

Voicing Modes: How SoundCheck DSP™ Makes Thumpv4 Sound Professional in Every Application

Voicing modes are at the heart of Soundcheck DSP™. Choose between four modes: Flat Mode for neutral sound, DJ Mode for music playback, Live Mode for vocals and Wedge Mode for using Thumpv4 as a stage monitor. These modes essentially transform Thumpv4 into four different specialized speakers: full range / flat response (FRFR) speaker,  DJ speaker, PA speaker and stage monitor, respectively. It’s four speakers in one—and prepared for any and every gig, day in and day out. Here’s a little more about the modes, and some applications where you would use them at professional gigs.

Flat Mode: Hands Off My Sound!

Like we said, SoundCheck DSP™ makes adjustments to the speaker internally, so you don’t have to be an audio expert to sound like one. But we’re Mackie. We know many of our users are, in fact, experts. You might know exactly how to adjust your sound, and have the tools to do it. You might not want the speaker to change the sound at all. Flat Mode keeps the response of Thumpv4 pure and unaltered, focusing on transparency. The rest is up to you.

Application: You’re a Live Sound Engineer, and You Finally Got Your Dream Mixer

Let’s say you are a busy live sound engineer, and you’re getting enough gigs to finally invest in the digital mixer of your dreams. You have the equivalent of a giant mixing console and a dozen racks of gear, all at your fingertips. Finally, you’ve made it. When you do your first gig with the new setup, you’re focusing on using your experience to get the most out of your new mixing console. All you want from your loudspeakers is a clear, honest representation of the sound. So, you’re going to press Live Mode and start mixing.

DJ Mode: Get Up, Get Down

Professional DJs can confirm: there is a big difference between listening to music casually and DJing an event. As a DJ, your job is to set the mood, whether you’re keeping the vibe up at a party, or getting people moving on the dance floor. You need the music to really connect with people. It needs to be impactful. It needs to leave an impression. That’s what DJ Mode is designed to do. When you press DJ Mode, SoundCheck DSP™ boosts the lowest and highest frequencies, also known as a “Smiley” EQ. This technique highlights the distinctive lows and highs of the music, great for keeping the energy up on the dance floor.

Application: You’re a Professional Wedding DJ

Professional wedding DJs are some of the hardest working people in music. They have to work in a huge variety of spaces, handle a wide variety of material, act as their own roadies, and be a master of ceremonies—all without losing the creative spark that makes them great at creating moments. On top of all that, the job is incredibly high-pressure. Every gig is important to the people who hired you. So, you’ll take any extra boost you can get. DJ Mode beefs up the low end, so the dance floor can feel that trademark "Thump." It also enhances the highs, so that searing Whitney Houston vocal can cut through, when the night is peaking and the whole wedding is singing along.

Live Mode: Find Your Voice (in the Mix)

The human voice is a very complex instrument. Whether it’s speech or singing, getting the voice to cut through the mix is sometimes challenging. What’s the point of writing that perfect song (or rousing speech) if the audience isn’t going to be able to hear you? Live Mode uses a modern, updated voicing that’s dialed into the human vocal frequency range. Using decades of experience making professional PA systems, Mackie designed this mode to make vocals sound present, clear and impactful, without having to wear out your vocal chords. If you’re going to be singing or talking, Live Mode will help you find (and keep) your voice.

Application: You Want More Control Over How Your Band Sounds

You’re a singer and primary songwriter of a band. You are tired of relying on the second-rate PA systems at the bars and local venues you play. The setups can be incomplete or badly maintained. Often, you feel the deck is stacked against you, and it’s impossible to sound your best. Your vocals tend to get buried in a muddy mess. So, you’ve decided to take your fate into your own hands: You’re buying your own professional PA speakers that you can bring with you to every gig. Choose Thumpv4 with SoundCheck DSP™, flip to Live Mode, and your vocals will be louder and clearer than ever. Now, you're free to focus on connecting with the audience.

Wedge Mode: Turn the Speaker on Its Side

Thumpv4 is shaped so you can easily use it sideways, as a stage monitor or “wedge” monitor. In fact, it’s specifically made to excel at this purpose. Just use the Voicing Modes button to select Wedge Mode. Behind the scenes, Wedge Mode is actually doing a couple very important things that make Thumpv4 into a stage monitor. Firstly, it’s reducing the low frequency. Why? Because having the side of the speaker against the ground creates resonance that increases the bass, so you need to compensate. Secondly, it’s reducing some of the midrange, where sounds tend to pile up and take on a lot of bite. Stage monitors are made for the artist to be able to hear themselves, and that cumulative “midrange bite” can get in the way, so you need to cut it. Live sound engineers know how to make these adjustments. So does SoundCheck DSP™.

Application: You Want to Take Control of Your Own Monitoring

You may trust venues to sound great for the audience, but you can be particular about your monitors. Many artists turn to personalized in-ear monitor systems, which can be effective, but also complex and quite expensive. Another option is to get your own stage monitor to bring to shows. It’s a simple way to make sure you’ll have your own dedicated monitoring solution at every gig, while remaining simple (and not requiring you to put anything in your ears). Instead of just buying a generic PA speaker and hoping for the best, grab a Thumpv4 loudspeaker and select Wedge Mode. Boom. A monitor just for you.

Instant Setup Features: How SoundCheck DSP™ Handles the Most Difficult Gigs

If you’ve been gigging long enough, you know about those “messy” gigs where things just seem to go wrong. No matter which voicing mode you choose, there are still some pain points that can happen during sound check. That’s why SoundCheck DSP™ also has a trio of setup features, all designed to eliminate common hurdles that can happen at gigs. These issues are less “optimizing” your sound, more “fixing a problem” so you don’t have to. Music Ducking, Feedback Eliminator and Outdoor Mode are life savers when there’s a high-pressure gig and things get a bit messy. Here’s how they work, and how they can come in clutch!

Feedback Eliminator: Feedback Is a Thing of the Past

A lot of things can go wrong with live sound. But some problems are worse than others. The worst of all, undoubtedly, is microphone feedback. Feedback is the only problem that will make every single person at the venue stop what they’re doing, cover their ears, use swear words, and finally, seek out whoever was responsible for that ear-damaging screech. Besides being unpleasant, microphone feedback makes you look incompetent. That’s why we made it a thing of the past. Turn on Feedback Eliminator on your Thumpv4 loudspeaker to magically* eliminate mic feedback, just like that. The worst case scenario has been taken off the table. And at a high-pressure gig, that’s one less thing to worry about.

*Okay, so it’s not literally magic. But it works like magic. And honestly, the tech is pretty impressive. When turned on, Feedback Eliminator constantly scans your signal for mic feedback. If it senses feedback, Feedback Eliminator hones in on the frequency that’s feeding back, then uses a filter to deal with it. It can do this up to six times simultaneously, at six different frequencies, using six different filters. All you have to do is press one button. Magical, right?

Messy Situation: You Do Live Sound for Karaoke

One of the cruelest things about mic feedback is that it’s not always your fault. Sometimes, the singer just doesn’t know how to handle the mic. As a live sound engineer for a karaoke bar, you deal with novice singers every night. Many of them, it must be said, are inebriated. Are some of these people going to dance around, carefree, and accidentally point the microphone directly at a speaker, almost as if they were trying to cause mic feedback on purpose? Yes, they are. They are going to do that. Every night. Feedback Eliminator is your security blanket.

Music Ducking: If I Could Just Make an Announcement

Music Ducking is perhaps the most “niche” feature of SoundCheck DSP™. But for users who have to make announcements while also playing music, it’s a dream come true. Some background: Thumpv4 speakers have a built-in mixer on the back that lets you connect several sources at once. One common application is to connect a mic on Channel 1, and another audio source (like a DJ controller or record player) on Channel 2. Set the gain for each channel, and you’re good to go. But if you need to make an unexpected announcement in the middle of a song, you run into a problem: You need to lower the level of the music for a second while you speak, then turn it back up. You could buy a separate mixer just for this purpose. Or, you could choose Thumpv4 loudspeakers, and just turn on Music Ducking. It dims the music automatically, whenever you speak into the mic. Then, it turns the music back up. Gradually. Like a pro.

Messy Situation: You’re a Wedding DJ and There Are Some Logistical Problems

The peaks of being a wedding DJ happen in the big moments of the day. The couple walks out of the ceremony to the perfect song. The dance floor peaks at the reception when you break out the right classic song at just the right time. These moments are what make you great at your job. But there’s a whole other part of the job that’s much less fun: when something goes wrong, you have to help manage it. You’re the one with a microphone. Some nights, you have to keep the vibe up while also telling the guests about last-minute changes of plans, cars blocking the parking lot, and any other announcements. These little things can add up to kill the vibe you're creating. Music Ducking helps you stay in the flow. Just pick up the mic, make the announcement and get back to spinning. Thumpv4 will make sure it comes off smoothly.

Outdoor Mode: Soaring Highs Under the Sky

We’ll give you one guess what the Outdoor Mode button does on the back of your Thumpv4 loudspeaker. Go ahead, guess. Yes, that’s right: You push this button when using the speaker outside. SoundCheck DSP™ gets the speaker ready to perform outdoors by boosting the high frequencies. The reason is because lower frequencies travel farther than higher frequencies. This issue is especially noticeable outside, when sound is moving in a straight line with nothing to reverberate against. Outdoor Mode is tuned to compensate just the right amount.

Messy Situation: The Gig Moved Outside at the Last Minute

You’re running sound for an indoor event. Sound check ended an hour ago. You have the mix just right. But at the last minute, they’re moving the event outdoors to enjoy the sunny weather. You have nothing against an outdoor gig, but you’re left in a bind: you dialed in all your settings for the indoor space. Now, you’re outside, and things sound different. Do you start all over? Not if your speakers have SoundCheck DSP™. Turn on Outdoor Mode to have your Thumpv4 speaker compensate for being outside, without needing to mess up your finely tuned mix.
